A Glimpse into Tango's Rich History
Argentine Tango was born in the late 19th century in the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Shaped by African, European, and Indigenous influences brought together through immigration, it evolved into a unique expression of music, dance, and social culture. Though it began in the margins of society, tango gradually gained worldwide recognition and became one of Argentina's most celebrated cultural symbols.
Tango's Brush with Extinction
During the mid-20th century, Argentine Tango faced a period of decline. The rise of new musical styles, changing social trends, and decades of political and economic instability reduced opportunities for tango to flourish. Under Argentina's military dictatorship during the 1970s, censorship and restrictions on public gatherings further threatened the survival of this cultural tradition.

In 2009, UNESCO recognized Argentine Tango as part of the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, affirming its importance as a living cultural tradition shared across generations.
Today, educators, musicians, dancers, and community organizations continue this legacy through classes, performances, festivals, and cultural programs that introduce new generations to the history, music, traditions, and social customs of Argentine Tango.
